My Research Journey

The topic I will be researching is how special education helps children with learning disabilities.  I chose this topic because my 16 year has reading disabilities and I have watched him struggle over the years.  While he is in school getting learning support from his IEP, he experiences some success and his grades have definitely improved.  I also see children at the center I work for, children as young as 18 months, receiving services through their IEP's.  I see the results and want to know what is working for each of these children.  Knowing that all children learn differently, I'm sure that each case involves different techniques and I am curious to know the methods and styles of the special education teachers as well as  the accommodations provided for these children.

Through the research chart, I have learned the many different steps involved in a research study.  I also realized the importance of following the steps in order to have a valid study.  I feel the "designing the research" step is going to be the key element in the research process and I am a little nervous about deciding which methods to use.

I look forward to reading other's posts and hope to learn from everyone about what worked for them, what didn't work, what they would do different next time, etc.  I feel that learning from my colleagues is vital to my success.

Good Luck to All as we begin our research journey!

  1. Lynn,

I enjoyed reading your post!!! My area of interest is teaching children with behavioral problems. I narrowed my search to children with Autism. I have always been concerned about the proper techniques in controlling children when they have tantrums or become violent in the classroom. This research should help me acquire skills that I need to help children remain in a safe learning environment. I feel I can learn a lot about your topic with implementing lesson plans for Autistic Children.

  2. Hello Lynn:
I am excited to learn about special education in the ECE field, because another team member, Ivelisse is researching the same topic. It will be wonderful opportunity to learn from both resources, you and Ivelisse. I suggested to Ivelisse to navigate NAEYC's website and Harvard University's web for reliable support for your research. Also, if you have any questions regarding our experiences in the ECE field with special education please do not hesitate to post a question.
Great topic, and thank you for sharing your personal experiences. :)

  4. Hi Lynn,

I have enjoyed reading your post. I am excited that you are focusing your research topic on how to assist students with disabilities, and IEP. I think this is an interesting topic that many people would love to learn more about in order to better their children, students, parents/guardians, advocators and policymakers. Good luck and let me know if I can assist in any way. I think you are off to a great start.

  5. I am glad you chose this topic to research. I think it is a very important topic as inclusion becomes the norm, regular education teachers need to know as much as they can about teaching and caring for children with special needs. Since I am a regular ed. teacher, I am excited to learn more and hear about your research.

  7. Hi Lynn,

It is nice to meet you again. My name is Magretta(Gretta) Nelson. You can go so many ways with the topic you chose. Special education has so many different specialties. My son who was born thirteen weeks early and as a result has had some challenges (mainly medical), which we know has an effect on the total child; has benefited from special education services since birth. I believe, early intervention has played a vital role, in how successful the service he has received has been. I am interested to find out which avenue or road you will take in your research process. Good luck!
